the Alpujarras
“Las Alpujarras” is a region rich in history, culture, diversity and stunning nature. It lies in Andalucia, South Spain, on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada and it has the highest mountain, the Mulhacen in mainland Spain.
It is this beautiful snow topped mountain together with the Acequia system, that helps the area to remain green and fertile, despite the very warm summers. This 1300 year old Al-Andalus/Muslim irrigation system survived here as much as the typical white villages with narrow streets and flat roofed houses. Being the refuge of the last Muslims on the Iberian Island and during the civil war for many guerilla fighters, formed the mentality of this poor, mountainous region.
This special atmosphere and also the cheap option to buy land (in the 70s – 00s) has attracted alternative people from all over the world, blending cultures and ideologies. One town in particular, Órgiva, is quite a melting pot, for artists and alternative folk, with many different communities dotted throughout the surrounding areas.
There is an abundance of creativity in this valley, with so many resourceful and skillful folk creating amazing events, workshops and alternative, sustainable ways of living. So many people who visit this region, leave feeling inspired and nurtured. This after getting to experience the rich cultures, of both the old and the new around, and getting to explore the beautiful landscape that surrounds everything here.
